The Catatumbo lightning is happening at night over Lake Maracaibo at the mouth of Catatumbo river. Getting there normally involves a boat trip from Puerto Concha into the lake down Concha's narrow river. Birds in all sizes inhabit the trees on the riverbed along with monkeys, iguanas and other animals. Sleeping is done on the lake at Chamita, which is a handful of stilt houses, where you get a hammock and panoramic views over the lake. If you want to get closer to the action head for the two stilt villages of Congo and Ologa further into the lake. In any cases, all you have to do is cross your fingers for some ionized clouds and the show will begin.
