One might think that the 2,800+ meters above sea level that is Quito would be high enough. But oh... no...! In a city surrounded by towering peaks, it only made sense for them to build a high-speed alpine lift to one of the nearby summits: enter the Quito Teleferico. The quick 8 minute ride rockets you up to just over 4,000 meters above sea level. Although the top remains rather undeveloped, there is no doubting the views are spectacular. For those wanting a bit of a challenge, trail lead up the side of the semi-active Pichinicha volcano (4,784 m). Whether just chilling at the cafe sipping a coca-leaf tea, or hiking up the side of the volcano, the Quito Teleferico is definitely breathtaking.
In the village of El Quiche, just outside Quito, stand a church. Well, actually it's a sanctuario. The difference being the sanctuary is built on the site of a miracle to commemorate the event. But this particular sanctuary, El Santuario Virgen de El Quinche, didn't stop with only one miracle. Over the years the place has been granting wishes to countless. Those who had their wishes granted have posted plaques on the north wall of the building. Faithful come at all times, but the best time to see the place is the 21st of November when 1,000s of pilgrim descend on the tiny town after an all night hike from Quito. Probably the biggest such festival in the country.
