Honduras travel guide
One of the greatest and most powerful Mayan kingdom through times has left some grand temple complexes close to the Guatemalan border. It located among soft hills and big shady trees. The temples are constructed in a low fashion with many remarkable ornamental details. The main thing here are the hundreds of hieroglyphs and sculptures which is unique to Copan. Furthermore the archaeologists have cleverly excavated one of the temples from the inside to uncover the fact that temples were often built over previous existing temples. If you are a bit ruin-out and need a break, you can have a chat with the squawky macaws in the treetops at the entrance.
While most of the Honduran tourism seems to centre around ruins and islands, hiking is becoming more popular. With a range of accommodation options and plenty of cafes and restaurants, the sleepy mountain village of Gracias is quickly becoming the base for this burgeoning industry. Surrounded by a number of national parks, like Celaque National Park, visitors have their choice of wilderness experience. And after the hike, a number of natural hot springs, like Posada Aguas Termales, await to wash away the aches and pains. With a combination of clean air, colonial architecture and access to unspoilt nature, Gracias will not be a hidden treasure for long.
Honduras' largest lake, Lago do Yojoa, sits in the middle of the country. And for the most part, it sits alone. Despite the enormous tourism and recreational potential of the lake, it see very few visitors, either local or international. With over 400 birds species and 800 plants species, it has wonderfully rich biodiversity. Taking out a row boat and throwing in a fishing line is a great way to spend the day. But for those needing a little more, there are a few sites in the region. Archeological sites like Parque Eco-arqueologico de los Naranjos, waterfalls like Pulhapanzak Falls and even a natural spring resembling the Blue Hole of Belize. Go now before developers figure out what a gem the place is.
