Yap was a part of my solo 7 weeks Micronesia trip, which had the following itinerary:
EU - (Cathay Pacific) - Philippines - (United Airlines) - Guam - (United Airlines) - Yap (FSM) - (United Airlines) - Majuro (RMI) - (Nauru Airlines) - Kiribati - (Nauru Airlines) - Nauru - (Nauru Airlines) - Pohnpei (FSM) - (United Airlines) - Palau - (United Airlines) - Philippines - (Cathay Pacific) - EU
Yap is probably the most traditional state of the four Micronesian states. You will even be greeted by a topless woman, in a grass skirt (that's how women are dressed on the outer islands, even today) when you arrive at the airport, who will give you a flower necklace.
They don't have an x-ray machine, so instead they do a time-consuming hand search.
There is a departure tax of 20 USD.
I rented a car from the local company 7D (across from Manta Ray Bay Resort) for 33 USD per day. No deposit was needed and they were very relaxed about scratches and dents, both when they delivered the car and when I returned it. The gas level didn't get checked either on return, because as he said "I trust you". How can you not love a place like this. Gas is 4.45 USD per gallon.
I stayed at ESA Bay View Hotel 102.75 USD per night, booked through Booking.com. The view over the bay is mangnificent and the food at the restaurant is good. The ladies working there are sweet.
Yap is famous for diving and particularly spotting manta rays.
